When it comes to placing animals with behavior or health issues, the outlook can be grim. That’s where Maggie’s Mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping dogs and horses in northern Ohio, comes in. This important rescue saves animals from urgent situations and overflowing shelters.
According to Keith DIwgosh, District Leader of PetSmart in the Cleveland/Akron area, Maggie’s Mission was chosen to receive a PetSmart Charities grant due to the amazing work they do.
“Our district voted Maggie's Mission to receive the grant due to their reputation, passion and involvement with supporting the store adoption program,” says DIwgosh.
Keeping Pets in Their Homes - Forever
The organization, which recently began accepting cats as well, launched a new initiative to prevent animals from ending up in a shelter in the first place.
“We frequently get calls from owners wanting to surrender their dogs,” says Marjorie Muirden, CEO and executive director of Maggie’s Mission.
Rather than immediately accept the animals, Muirden works to keep them in their current homes.
“I always try to give them some options, and we have helped several elderly, low-income owners keep their dogs by providing food and basic vet care,” says Muirden. “It just makes more sense to keep a 12-year-old dog in the home that they have been in all their lives, if it’s possible.”
PetSmart Charities Grant to Cover Veterinary Costs
Maggie’s Mission will use the grant money to fund its day-to-day expenses, especially the costs of providing medical care.
“Almost all of our money goes directly to veterinary bills,” Muirden says.
The grant will allow the organization to help more animals in the community, making DIwgosh proud to be a supporter.
“Maggie and her volunteers’ passion to help animals in need aligns with PetSmart’s mission,” he says. “She has the biggest heart and it is contagious to others, encouraging them to contribute to the mission of helping animals in need.”
